It is usually self limiting and often occurs in children and adolescents. The main route of transmission is droplet transmission. Preschool children are easy to be infected, and 90% of the patients are aged from 5 to 15. Mumps is a worldwide disease, which can occur throughout the year. It mainly occurs in winter and spring, and sometimes in public places such as kindergartens and schools. After infection, it can generally obtain lasting immunity and never relapse for life.

What symptom does parotitis have?

In the early stage of parotid gland, there may be redness and swelling, but no secretion. When the parotid gland is swollen, it reaches a peak two to three days later, and gradually subsides four to five days later. In severe cases, submandibular gland, sublingual gland and lymph node may be involved at the same time. Mumps can also induce meningoencephalitis, orchitis and ovaritis, pancreatitis.

Generally, the parotid gland on one side is swollen first, and the opposite side will be involved after 2 to 4 days. The swelling takes the earlobe as the center, develops forward, backward and downward, making the mandibular edge fuzzy, surrounding skin edema, burning, pain, local skin tight, shiny and elastic, and the surface is hot but not red. When you open your mouth to eat, especially when you eat acidic food, the swelling and pain aggravate.

Patients generally have low fever, headache, weakness and other symptoms. After one to two days, the parotid gland gradually swells, and the body temperature rises, which can be as high as 39 times to 40 ℃. The duration of onset varies from one day to two days, mostly about a week. Generally, the increase of body temperature and the length of time have nothing to do with the degree of parotid gland swelling.
