Adverse reactions were similar to penicillin, and allergic reactions were more common. Rash is the most common reaction, mostly occurred in 5 days after medication, presenting with urticaria or macular papules; interstitial nephritis can also occur; allergic shock is occasionally seen.
Gastrointestinal reactions such as glossitis, gastritis, nausea, vomiting, enteritis, diarrhea and mild abdominal pain were also more common.
Granulocytopenia and thrombocytopenia are occasionally seen in patients treated with ampicillin.
