What is banded keratopathy?

The disease can occur in all ages, often monocular, but also binocular onset. The development of the disease is slow and can last for more than 10 years. The initial corneal opacity is slight, which is difficult to be detected by naked eye. When the haze is obvious, it can be seen that it is located in the exposed area of the palpebral fissure cornea, which is equivalent to the level of the pre elastic layer. Calcic gray white or white turbid spots appear successively near the nose and temporal side respectively. There is a narrow transparent band between the turbid area and the limbus cornea to separate it.

The central side of the turbid area is fuzzy and can slowly expand to the center. After many years of change, the two ends became turbid and fused into a 3-5mm wide band lesion. Sometimes it can be accompanied by neovascularization. Slit lamp examination showed that there was a transparent hole in the turbid calcium spot, which was the channel for the trigeminal nerve to pass through the pre elastic membrane. The turbid area is composed of the deposits in the subcutaneous layer, the elastic membrane and the superficial layer of the matrix.

Turbid spots can be gradually dense and thickened, making the epithelium above them swell, rough and uneven, and even epithelial erosion, causing photophobia, tears, eye pain and other irritation symptoms. The visual acuity of the patients decreased significantly in the late stage.
