Tracheobronchial foreign body is a common emergency. The foreign body may remain in the laryngopharyngeal cavity, laryngeal cavity, trachea and bronchus, causing hoarseness, dyspnea, etc. the right bronchus is thick, short and long, so the foreign body is easy to fall into the right main bronchus. 75% of the cases occurred in children under 2 years old.

Typical symptoms of foreign body in trachea

When the foreign body enters the trachea through the glottis during the foreign body inhalation period, it will appear severe cough, and some will appear temporary suffocation and cyanosis at the same time. If the foreign body is embedded in the glottis, hoarseness and dyspnea may occur, and asphyxia may occur in severe cases. If the foreign body enters the trachea or bronchus, there may be no other symptoms except slight cough.

During the quiet period, the foreign body enters the trachea and bronchus, stays in a certain part, and the irritation decreases. At this time, the patient may have a slight cough without other symptoms, which is often ignored. If the foreign body blocks the trachea and causes inflammation, the period will soon end and enter the third period.

The local stimulation and secondary inflammation of foreign bodies in the inflammatory stage aggravate the blockage of trachea and bronchus, and may present cough, atelectasis and emphysema. Patients may have elevated body temperature in this stage.

matters needing attention

Make full use of X-ray examination to find positive signs and improve the diagnostic accuracy. Chest X-ray fluoroscopy and plain film should be taken routinely for children with respiratory symptoms. Pay attention to observe whether there is mediastinal swing, emphysema or atelectasis, because these X-ray positive signs are indirect evidence of bronchial foreign bodies, and direct evidence can be obtained for metal foreign bodies. Of course, normal X-ray examination can not completely exclude the existence of foreign bodies, especially for foreign bodies located in the trachea.
